台湾桃園市崙坪文化地景園区での「craft×craft 客日工藝交流聯展」にご招待いただき、12日のオープニングセレモニーに参加してきました。
挨拶でも話したのですが、実は「工芸とは何か」という問いに対して私自身、明確な定義が分かりません。近年クラフトという言葉が多方面で使われるようになりその意味はますます広義になっています。この展覧会を通して工芸とは何かということが見つかればいいなと思っています。
インターネットで調べてみると、工芸の定義は「自然素材を用いて匠の技によってつくられたもの」とあります。でも、匠の技って何だろうって思います。どこからが匠の技でどこまでが普通の技なんでしょう？
で、建築デザイナーの林建華さんとのトークセッションを通して思ったのですが、彼がこの中でAIについて触れていて工芸とは人間にしかできない技だと言っていたのが非常に印象に残っています。ああ、つまり、工芸って人間の叡智の結集なんじゃないかなと思いました。
たぶん、AIがつくったものなんてあまり感動しないですよね、直観的に。
なんていう、一つの結論に至ったことは大きな結果でした。
台湾の皆さんは優しくて食べ物もおいしくて本当に楽しい旅でした。
ちなみに、英語を習い始めて初めての海外旅行でしたが、私の使った英語はただ一つ。

What Is Craft?
I attended the opening ceremony for “craft × craft Hakka－Japan Craft Exchange Exhibition” in Taoyuan, Taiwan on 12th July. It was a great honor for me to be invited to this exhibition and I gave a speech on behalf of guests from Japan in the ceremony.
In this speech, I said that I didn’t yet comprehend the definition of craft regardless I was born into the parents who were making potteries and I have dedicated myself to pottery over two decades. Generally, the craft is defined as the object, especially handiworks, that is made of natural materials, using skillful techniques, however, I think it depends on the person, country or even area. In short, I mean there are as many definitions of craft as there are people. And I wonder no one can explain its definition in a way everyone can be convinced.
In this exhibition, I had a talking session about craft with an architect and interior designer Mr. Lin. In this talk, he mentioned AI. He said AI would be a powerful tool for making things, though, it would probably never create craftworks. This words strongly impressed me. Why did he think AI couldn’t create craftworks? What’s the difference between craftworks and usual handiworks? As a result, this talk session made me realize what the craft was.
I think craft is the gathering of humans’ wisdom, knowledge and intelligence. When we create works, we put all efforts we can do in the works. That is, craft requires experiences, knowledge and creativity. It might sound exaggerated and I am sorry if it sounded arrogant.
But, this is my answer for the question “What is craft?” through talking to people in Taiwan and looking at their works.
